The Art of Moving Slowly

I had the strangest experience today. Driving for the first time in weeks. Our normal cruising speed felt utterly too fast. My reactions felt slow and uncoordinated. As my brain raced to keep up, I grappled with the overwhelming feeling I had left part of myself at the top of the driveway! Strangely, this feeling was oddly familiar.

A few years back I had the privilege of working in an isolated outdoor adventure camp for three months. Physical work was part of our everyday routine. Daily tasks were often manual, and we travelled mostly by foot. We worked hard, AND we felt connection with ourselves, nature and those around us. Everything was in balance.

Transitioning back in civilisation was hard. Everything overstimulated me. I wanted run, far far away from the harrowing speed of everyday life. What was different? The speed at which I moved my body. Think about it, today we move at speeds, both physically and mentally, like never before. Technology has increased our efficiency and speed. Our ancestors would balk at what we expect of ourselves.

When we move at our natural speed, we experience greater connection with our body, mind and soul.

Our natural speed enables more space to reflect, opportunity to adapt, and maybe even easier to grasp patience. There is less rushing, less frantic energy, less pressure to do and be more. I am grateful for this reminder today. It has reminded me of how good it is to move at our natural pace. It has reignited a desire to take periods of slowness forward with me in life. Less is more.

In what areas could you move more slowly? What difference would it make to your life?
